crazy-for-books hop and my new favorite author Jamie Ford

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet: A Novel

It's that time of the week againGood morning to everybody from the hop
Lori(Jennifer's friend)helped her come up with a great question
Who is your new to you favorite author?  Mine is Jamie Ford    the book addicts on Good reads
had picked this one a couple of months.  I just not too long ago got it.   The reason I say he's my new favorite author
is that  he has the gift wehn it comes to using similies  and metaphors in his writing.  I swear I kept checking the front of the book to see if he had  more than one book!  I mean to say He writes like someone
who's been around the block is a gross understatement he is the block!   The story's main character
Henry Lee is faced with life after his wife of many years has died.  What his son Marty doesn't know is that
his father is the staunch Chinese Nationalist he thinks he is.  His best friend from childhook was a Japenese
girl named,Keiko  who was taken taken away to the Japanese internment camps set up in  1942.
The other I really like about this author's writing style is that he can go from 1942 to 1986 seemlessly
I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could it's that good but 5 is the maxium I give anyone
this one is going in the permanent collection.   So who is your favorite author? Who is your all-time favorite?

and the trivia question is Do you own a Kindle or do you prefer traditional books?
Besides the fact that I am too broke to own one.  I prefer books .  One of my fondest memories
as a 3rd grader at Sanderson Elementary(now named Cook)  was waiting on the Bookmobile to
come every week.  I had the same anticipation as any child would if it were Christmas Eve and fully
aware of just how many presents under the tree were for them!  (Except my feeling was better because
I had it every week)So I can't see myself trading in that warm ,fuzziness for a ........Kindle.  So tell me what you think? If given a choice which do you prefer

Damaged book review and contest winners

If I could actually get away with just one phrase to describe this book
then I'd say "What a rush!",But of course nobody in their right frame of mind
would read  these reviews if that's all I said!  So let me clarify.  This is part of the Maggie O'Dell series , she's an FBI profiler who is sent to Pensacola,Florida
to track a killer , right before Hurricane Issac will make landfall.( I mean it's
just a category 5.  What's the problem?  As if preparing for a hurricane
wasn't stressful enough)  I love the way the plot plays out.  Usually for this genre the
pace is pretty quick, and as it probably should be depending on your goal as the
writer.  The pace is a little slower which in this case is good because you can pay
closer attention to details that will become crucial later in the story.  I was also pleased
with the character development .They were relatable and actually felt, dare I say it
empathetic to Maggie's characater.( I mean dude come on she already has Post
Traumatic Stress brought on by the previous cases and because of the nature of the
the job she will inevitably be traumatized so more)  OK.  before I go off on another tangent let me just say
that if you have been fiending for a suspense/mystery/thriller fix then this is it! I gave it 5 out of 5 stars. I would
like to thank Double Day publishing for allowing me the opportunity to review this book and no I don't get paid to do so. I am an Amazon associate.  Without further ado My two  winners are
Autumn and Brenda   so if you are reading this please email your address to
clsherrard(dot)bookaddict(at)gmail(dot)com so I can get the info to DoubleDay .  Stay tuned the next giveaway is coming very soon

What I am reading and Welcome!

Good morning fellow addicts   I am glad you stopped by and as usual Jennifer fromwww.crazy-for-books.com
Has posed a really good question .  I am finishing up Damaged by Alex Kava  I am giving away 2 copies
(Leave your comments in the contest  giveaway post further down) and I am also reading Hotel on the
Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford (Boyfriend got a gift I swear)
I just finished "Here's the Deal Dont Touch Me" by Howie Mendell
I am going to brutally honest here .  I had no intention on reading this book at all
I saw Mr. Mendell promoting this book on Good Morning America and I thought
to myself thougt it wasn't for me .  I mean aren't alot of actors, althletes trying
to get us their kinda crappy memoirs?(The only reason I have the book is
because the Amazon seller sent this instead of "Drown" by Junot Diaz.  I wont say
which one because we all make mistakes)   I detest /loathe/hate the idea of
wasting money.  Heck it doesn't even have to be my money and I it drives me nuts.
So that's the real reason I read this book..  Did You know Howie Mendell wasn't diagnosed with Adhd until he was an Adult?   That he married the only girl he actually
dated.. I have a newfound respect for his wife of 30 years especially since fans are
disrespectful at times, their privacy doesn't exist and she has had to do the lion's share
of raising the kids.  Howie Mendell's struggle with Ocd and Adhd makes this a entertaining read.I guess having a sense of humor can get you through some things.  I gave it 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

Secrets of Newberry Review and Winner of the book!

Essence Bestselling author Victor McGlothin has done it again with "Secrets of Newberry"(the secrets will rock you to your core but that's not until later in the box)
Our story begins in New Orleans in the 1950's on the night that the two main
characters lives will be radically changed.   Ivory "Bones" Arcineaux meets Hampton
Bynote at an illegal gambling house.  Things get hot for our scoundrels until Hampton
meets Magnolia Holiday  she appears to be everything  he is looking for except
he doesn't know it yet.  While she definitely makes a difference in Hampton's liefe will
her love/influence be enough on  the road up ahead?  I Know I am supposed to feel some empathy for Hampton's character I dont ,not because he wasn't   a "tortured soul" (He was and rightfully so ) it's just that I didn't really feel sympathetic until almost
the end.  I did relate to his sister Pearl Lee.  I thought for a male author he did a pretty good job with that without making all of us sound domineering .  The dialouge was
cliched to me at first but it definitely  improved.  The plot is good in spite of that funny
little twist almost  3/4ths of the way into the book.McGlothin's writing style is engaging, vivid, and at some moments raw, but overall  a worthwhile read I gave it 4out of 5 stars.  I would like to thank the Hatchett Book Group for allowing me this opportunity  to review this book .(No I don't get paid to do this)

And the winner of  "Secrets of Newberry " is Mike  Mike please email me at clsherrard(dot)bookaddict(at)gmail (dot) com within 48 hours  Send me your mailing address so I can send it to the Hatchett Group .       I will still be giving away two copies of "Damaged" by Alex Kava deadline is not until Sunday so stay tuned

A Maze of Grace by Trish Ryan

This is the follow up to "He loves me,he loves me not"   God had answered her prayer
about finding a Husband, but more importantly we see the challenges they face now
I am so appreciate her honestly.   Anyone who sinecrely tries to do what God wants them to do is not only going to get the total opposite of the Happily Ever after
Existance but also recieve the grace and mercy needed to finish the journey.  God can see you through hard times.  Here in this book is a demonstration of what the benefits
are to having a strong foundation in Christ.  Since this is my first Christian memoir I can
only compare it to other memoirs.  I have to say she does have a provactive writing style.  She asks a lot of  questions that you and I have probably asked our best friend
or ourselves in private.  Definitely a good read I gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Ftc disclosure  I would like to thank Faith Words for allowing me the opportunity to
review this book and no I dont get paid  to do so

Rules of Engagement: Finding Faith and Purpose In a discconnected world By Chad Hennings

I gotta admit when I gotta admit when I got this book and realized it was geared toward men I was sorely disappointed.  The fact that he use to play for the Dallas
Cowboys meant absolutelynothing to me since I was'nt a football fan.But I felt obligated to read it and so I did Imagine my surprise when
it got me ,Ms Ultra Feminine, thinking about what I am here for and what is the purpose for my life!   So for me it was'nt the fact that he was  Air Force ,then a Dallas
Cowboy and then a businessman it was the idea that he had all the things society says
we should be happy : money, fame, and the attraction of the opposite sex  and yet
Self Fufillment  didn't come until he became active in ministry and charity work.    Another story that stood out was that of Victor Frankl who lost everything while
imprisoned in a Nazi Concentration  .  Most people would be hard pressed to  keep living without there job, or car  or family but Frankl not only lost all these things all at once he decided to give other prisoners the will to live.  No mattter what your circumstances are God can use you.    Nietzshe is quoted as saying "He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how."  I believe that a good relationship with  Christ will lead you to they why and he can give you the strength  to endure any how.

I think the style and the book was organized  and simple and yes Ladies I think you can benefit from this book, too  I give the book 4 out of 5 stars. FTC Disclosure  : I would like to thank Faithwords which is a division of The Hatchett Group  for allowing me the opportunity to review this book and no I dont get paid to do this
